OLDSMAR, Fla. – If you’re looking for the classic wide-open betting affair with opportunities for value everywhere, then look no further than Saturday’s $100,000 Turf Dash at five furlongs over the Tampa Bay Downs grass course. From nine-time winner Thunder Harbor on the rail to multiple stakes victor Yes I’m Lucky, who will have to get lucky and draw into the field from his outside slot in the overflow group of 12 grass sprinters, the Dash has betting angles and challenges aplenty. For those who are strong followers of track and course biases, a long look should be given to inside runners. Many turf sprints were won from the inside three post positions last season, and Thunder Harbor and Stormofthecentury, who break from the No. 2 and No. 1 stalls, have the credentials to take advantage of that favorable portion of the course. Stormofthecentury won the Grade 3 Turf Monster at Parx Racing in 2013, and while he won just a single race from six starts last year, he kept tough stakes-level company most of the year and comes into Saturday’s headliner with more than $400,000 in career earnings. Thunder Harbor came off a 10-week break with a sharp winning effort on the main track, and from the rail, he should be one of several contesting what figures to be a torrid early pace. Thunder Harbor will be making his third start for the meet’s leading trainer, Gerald Bennett, and was roughed up badly when he last tried turf sprinting at Indiana Grand two races back. If you’re willing to overlook a tough post position, then Green Mask might be what you’re looking for. The recently gelded 4-year-old moves from Christophe Clement’s barn to Wesley Ward’s and has three wins from six starts, including a minor stakes win on turf last year at Belmont. Yes I’m Lucky will have to break from the far outside if he draws into the feature, but if he does, the winner of five of eight lifetime, including two turf stakes, most likely will be the betting choice. There are several others in the field with the credentials to upset, including recent winners Cee ’n O and Rojo Verde. KEY CONTENDERS Stormofthecentury (Last 3 Beyers: 81-87-81) ◗ He should get a perfect stalking trip behind a torrid and crowded battle for the lead into the stretch, and jockey Ronnie Allen Jr. knows how to win over the local greenery. Cee ’n O (Last 3 Beyers: 79-52-69) ◗ He used stalking tactics to take his last local start. He also figures to be just off the first flight, and Antonio Gallardo, who has been riding like a man possessed over the past six weeks here, is back at the controls. Yes I’m Lucky (Last 3 Beyers: 88-80-61) ◗ He is unquestionably the class of this field, and if he draws into the body of the race, he has to be considered, even from the far outside. ◗ Five wins from eight starts and two turf stakes wins are strong assets to bring to this one. Mongol Bull (Last 3 Beyers: 71-92-84) ◗ He might be the “sleeper at a price” special of this group. He won three straight sprinting on grass at Arlington, then came flying in the Grade 3 Woodford at Keeneland to be just a half-length back at 56-1. Throw out his last effort, and he looks as good as any in here.
