ALTOONA, Iowa – Iowa Classic Night, comprised of seven Iowa-bred stakes races on Saturday worth a total of more than $585,000, features a stellar set of 2-year-olds competing in the $75,000 Iowa Sorority and $75,000 Iowa Cradle. The Sorority, with six of its nine fillies victorious in open company, is headed by Who’s Smokin, who won the $58,488 Prairie Gold Lassie by a length July 17. Trained by Jon Arnett for breeder and owner James M. Hobbs, Who’s Smokin, a Smoke Glacken filly, tallied a field-best 73 Beyer Speed Figure in her May 21 maiden win and possesses tactical speed for jockey Alex Canchari. It’s the Swede, Mywomanfromtokyo, and Native Princess spearhead Who’s Smokin’s opposition in the six-furlong Sorority. It’s the Swede, also trained by Arnett, seeks to rebound from a disadvantageous inside trip when eighth against boys in the $52,450 Prairie Gold Juvenile. After an impressive 12 1/2-length debut win May 29, It’s the Swede tackled males to avoid a clash with Who’s Smokin. Mywomanfromtokyo, a well-regarded Neko Bay filly trained by Kelly Von Hemel, cruised to a 4 1/2-length win against subsequent winner Richardsluckylady on July 18 and worked a sharp half-mile in 46.86 seconds last Saturday in anticipation of the Sorority. Trained by Chris Richard, Native Princess, from the first crop of the Iowa-based stallion Native Ruler, has a good finishing kick that should be suited to the Sorority’s added distance. The Cradle, also contested over six furlongs, drew six and is topped by One Fine Dream, Cornfed, and No Holds Barred. One Fine Dream, an 11 1/2-length winner of his July 19 debut, drew the inside post and looks to build on that effort for Richard. Cornfed, conditioned by Ray Ashford for breeder Jeff Hartz’s Runaway Racing LLC, has gone 2 for 2 in his nascent career, including a convincing 4 1/4-length win July 5 in the $69,975 Iowa Stallion Futurity. No Holds Barred, conditioned by leading trainer Lynn Chleborad, bounced back from a sixth in Cornfed’s Futurity win to rally strongly for second in the Prairie Gold Juvenile, one length behind the speedy Stormation. :: Bet Prairie Meadows with DRF Bets. Scherer Magic, who has come to hand recently with back-to-back wins when contesting the pace for Ashford and jockey Ken Tohill, is the horse to beat in the inaugural Johnson Memorial. Colerful Bride, a 3-year-old Munnings filly who scored a resounding three-length win May 29 in the $69,566 Bob Bryant over six panels, aims to stretch her ability around two turns in the $80,000 Iowa Breeders’ Oaks. Facing 11 rivals, the Ray Tracy-trained Colerful Bride has been freshened since the Bryant and retains jockey Shane Laviolette. The $80,000 Iowa Breeders’ Derby, which attracted 13 3-year-olds, includes an interesting shipper who makes the trek up from Churchill Downs for Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott. Purchased for $325,000 as a 2-year-old, a record sale price for an Iowa-bred, Net Gain, a Feb. 22 maiden winner over Aqueduct’s inner track, has a substantial edge in Beyer Speed Figures but is stuck in the outside post. Older Iowa-breds come to the fore for Iowa Classic Night’s two most valuable events – the $100,000 Ralph Hayes and the $100,000 Donna Reed. :: DRF Bets Exotic Summer: Get a refund of up to $25 on losing exacta box bets at Prairie Meadows on Saturday The eight-horse Ralph Hayes field contains Cainam, the winner of the 2011 and 2013 renewals; the defending champ, Zeki; and Excessive, the winner of the Cyclones Handicap on June 13. Due to divisional leader Sumting Wong’s notable absence, the Donna Reed is wide open, with I Tour and Rallydownthealley expected to vie for favoritism in the nine-horse field of fillies and mares. Iowa Classic Night concludes the 67-day Thoroughbred meet, and notably, Iowa-breds have set a record with more than 60 wins in open company this season. Jockey Ramon Vazquez, who has 84 wins through Wednesday’s program, is the meet’s leading rider. Vazquez’s top client, Danny R. Caldwell, is the leading owner with a 43-for-135 mark. Chleborad, 46 for 263, and Federico Villafranco, 43 for 137, continue to battle for top trainer honors. The 25-day Quarter Horse meet begins Aug. 15.
