Whitmore's Conn retiring

David Grening|Sep 16, 2003

Whitmore's Conn, the New York-bred who won the Grade 1 Sword Dancer Invitational at Saratoga in August, has sustained a bowed tendon in his left foreleg and will be retired, according to trainer Randy Schulhofer.

The bow showed up Tuesday morning on an ultrasound performed at Schulhofer's Belmont Park barn. On Sunday, Schulhofer had noticed some swelling in Whitmore's Conn's pastern bone.

Owned by Michael and Lynn Shanley, Whitmore's Conn won 7 of 28 starts, including back-to-back runnings of the Grade 2 Bowling Green Handicap at Belmont Park. A son of Kris S., Whitmore's Conn earned $740,426.

Whitmore's Conn most recently ran seventh in the Grade 1 Man o' War at Belmont on Sept. 6. His victory in the Sword Dancer was Schulhofer's first Grade 1.
