ELMONT, N.Y. – White Abarrio, third in the Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap last out, returned to the work tab Monday morning at Belmont Park, breezing five furlongs in 59.61 seconds over the main track.Trainer Richard Dutrow Jr. said White Abarrio is being pointed to the Grade 1, $500,000 Forego on Aug. 26 at Saratoga. Though that race is 11 weeks from the Met Mile, Dutrow noted that White Abarrio’s best races have come with ample time between starts. The Met Mile, for which he earned a career-best 106 Beyer Speed Figure, came with 88 days between races. His third-place finish, beaten a half-length, in last December’s Grade 1 Cigar Mile, came with 73 days between starts.“If you look at his [past performances], he fires big time when he’s had two to three months between races, so I don’t know why we don’t follow that,” Dutrow said. The Met Mile was White Abarrio’s first start for Dutrow. He bobbled coming out of the gate and was up close to the early pace before backing off of it. He lost some position going into the turn and was behind a wall of horses coming to the quarter pole. White Abarrio had to go widest of all in the lane and was beaten a head by Zandon for second, with both finishing 3 1/4 lengths behind Cody’s Wish.“I think what cost him more than anything was how quickly he broke and the jock had to keep going with him and he doesn’t want to be in front,” Dutrow said. “But he broke so sharp he had to keep going in order to regain his balance.”While Dutrow said White Abarrio is “razor-sharp” right now, he isn’t concerned about waiting two months to run the horse.“He’s a very, very manageable horse,” Dutrow said.
