Whipper upsets Six Perfections

Whipper could be headed to the Breeders' Cup Mile, after defeating last year's Mile winner, Six Perfections, in the Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville on Sunday.

Under France's leading rider Christophe Soumillon, Whipper held Six Perfections safe through the final furlong for a one-length victory at 5-1 in the $677,000 Group 1 mile. Clearly relishing the soft ground, he was timed in 1:38.40. My Risk, who led briefly at the three-sixteenths pole, was third, 1 1/2 lengths behind Six Perfections, while the 7-5 favorite Attraction was last of 10.

Owned by Robert Strauss, Whipper is trained by Robert Collet, the man who engineered Last Tycoon's victory in the 1986 Breeders' Cup Mile. Six Perfections, winless in three 2004 starts, is still on course for a defense of her BC Mile title.
