Whatmakessammyrun will skip Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint

ARCADIA, Calif. – Whatmakessammyrun, winner of the Grade 2 Eddie D Stakes on the hillside turf course on Oct. 1 at Santa Anita, will skip the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint on Nov. 5 at Keeneland.
Trainer Mark Glatt said Sunday that Whatmakessammyrun will be pointed to the Grade 2 Joe Hernandez Stakes, a $250,000 race on the hillside turf course on Dec. 31 at Santa Anita.
“We’re not going to Kentucky,” Glatt said.
Glatt said there is a possibility that Whatmakessammyrun could start in the newly created $100,000 Stormy Liberal Stakes at five furlongs on turf Dec. 3 at Del Mar, although the distance is shorter than what he thinks is the best trip for the 4-year-old gelding.

“I don’t think we want to wait for the Joe Hernandez,” Glatt said. “I want to keep him fresh, but not that fresh.”
Owned by Sterling Racing, Whatmakessammyrun has won 4 of 15 starts and earned $304,570. The $202,000 Eddie D Stakes was Whatmakessammyrun’s second stakes win in his debut on the hillside course. Whatmakessammyrun won the minor Desert Code Stakes for 3-year-olds at six furlongs on the flat portion of the turf course at Santa Anita in June 2021.
The Hernandez is the richest turf sprint of the Santa Anita winter-spring meeting, including races on the flat portion of the turf course and the hillside course.
