Whatmakessammyrun will shorten up, point to Kentucky Downs

The Santa Anita stakes winner Whatmakessammyrun, fifth as the 2-1 favorite in the Oceanside Stakes at a mile on turf July 16, will return to a sprint at Kentucky Downs in September.
Whatmakessammyrun was beaten 1 1/2 lengths by Flashiest in the Oceanside Stakes, his first start since a win in the Desert Code Stakes for 3-year-olds at six furlongs on turf on June 6 at Santa Anita. Trainer Mark Glatt said Whatmakessammyrun will be pointed to the Grade 2 Franklin-Simpson Stakes, a $600,000 race for 3-year-olds at 6 1/2 furlongs on turf on Sept. 11.
“He doesn’t want to go long, clearly,” Glatt said. “He wasn’t effective. We’ll go back to what he does best.”
Glatt said Whatmakessammyrun is unlikely to run in the interim, essentially ruling out a start in the Grade 3 Green Flash Handicap, a $100,000 race against older horses at five furlongs on turf on Aug. 22 at Del Mar.
“I think that race puts us too close to the Kentucky Downs race,” Glatt said. “When they’re racing for that kind of money, you’ve got to take your best shot at them.”
