Whatmakessammyrun likely to step out of comfort zone and run in Oceanside

ARCADIA, Calif. – Whatmakessammyrun used a late-running style to comfortably win the Desert Code Stakes for 3-year-olds at six furlongs on turf at Santa Anita on Sunday. Whatmakessammyrun will start at longer distances at Del Mar before an expected return to a turf sprint at Kentucky Downs in September.
Trainer Mark Glatt said on Wednesday that Whatmakesammyrun is likely to start in the $100,000 Oceanside Stakes at a mile on turf for 3-year-olds at Del Mar on July 16, the track’s opening day.
The main goal is the Grade 2 Franklin-Simpson Stakes, a $600,000 race for 3-year-olds at 6 1/2 furlongs at Kentucky Downs on Sept. 11.

“How we get to that race just right is yet to be determined,” Glatt said. “That’s right up his alley.”
In the Desert Code, Whatmakesammyrun closed from fifth in a field of six to take the lead in the final furlong. Ridden by Flavien Prat, Whatmakesammyrun pulled clear by 3 3/4 lengths.
“He certainly has an awesome turn of foot,” Glatt said. “Good-quality turf horses have that turn of foot. It was eye-catching, to say the least.”
Owned by Sterling Ranches, Whatmakessammyrun has won 3 of 8 starts and is unbeaten in two starts for Glatt, including a late rally to win an allowance race at six furlongs on turf on May 2 in his California debut. Whatmakesammyrun was third in the Atlantic Beach Stakes at a mile on turf for 2-year-olds last November when trained by George Weaver.

Glatt has East Coast plans this summer for Dr. Schivel, unraced since a win in the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity last September. Dr. Schivel is nearing a return to racing and will be pointed for two stakes at Saratoga – the Grade 2 Amsterdam Stakes at 6 1/2 furlongs on Aug. 1 and the Grade 1 Allen Jerkens Memorial Stakes at seven furlongs on Aug. 28.
