Whateverybodywants joins Super Derby cast
Whateverybodywants, who was second in the Grade 2 West Virginia Derby on Aug. 6, is being pointed for the Super Derby at Louisiana Downs, trainer Kellyn Gorder said Monday. The Grade 3, $400,000 race is Sept. 10.
Gorder won the 2012 Super Derby with Bourbon Courage, who also ran second in the West Virginia Derby in his start preceding the Super Derby. Gorder said there were a couple of reasons to target the Super Derby with Whateverybodywants.
“The timing seems really good for him,” Gorder said. “It spaces out his races, and that’s what we did with Bourbon, and it worked. We went down there, and he ran a big race.”
Gorder said plans are to ship Whateverybodywants to Louisiana Downs from his Keeneland base about five days in advance of the Super Derby. The horse had his first breeze back since the West Virginia Derby on Saturday, going seven-eighths in company in 1:26.40.
“It was a really nice work,” Gorder said. “He gave [his company] a couple of lengths, and he caught him at the wire.”
Whateverybodywants won the $65,000 Prairie Meadows Mile on June 10. He is a son of Giant Oak and races for his breeder, The Farm on 4.
