Weyburn works for Jim Dandy

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Weyburn, the Grade 3 Gotham winner and runner-up to Mandaloun in the Pegasus Stakes on June 13 at Monmouth, worked five furlongs in 1:00.83 on Friday morning over the Saratoga main track, preparing for a start in the Grade 2, $600,000 Jim Dandy Stakes here July 31.
Working by himself, Weyburn went in splits of 12.65 seconds, 24.33, 35.43, and finished in 25.40 after hanging on his left lead until deep stretch.
“It looks like the track is a little on the slow side, so I wanted to get him over it,” trainer Jimmy Jerkens said. “I thought he worked decent, especially going by himself.”
Weyburn has often been late changing leads in his races. Jerkens said Weyburn may have also been gawking at the grandstand.
“I don’t think it’s a big issue,” Jerkens said of the lead changes. “He was still running along pretty good.”
Jim Dandy candidate Masqueparade, the Grade 3 Ohio Derby winner, worked a half-mile in 48.93 over the main track in company with the 3-year-old filly Sum Kinda Pretty.
