HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – Wet Paint should appreciate the added ground she will pick up next month in the Kentucky Oaks, trainer Brad Cox said Sunday. Wet Paint will be looking for her fourth consecutive stakes win when she starts in the 1 1/8 miles classic for 3-year-old fillies May 5 at Churchill Downs. She leads all runners in points for the race with 170 after picking up 100 on Saturday for her win in the Grade 3, $600,000 Fantasy at Oaklawn. Wet Paint has won her last three starts at 1 1/16 miles, closing from off the pace to take the $200,000 Martha Washington and Grade 3 Honeybee, both at Oaklawn ahead of the Fantasy. “The filly should relish more ground, based on pedigree and how she runs,” Cox said. :: Bet the races on DRF Bets! Wet Paint earned a career-high Beyer of 89 for her 2 1/2-length win in the Fantasy. Cox said Wet Paint is to ship Tuesday to Churchill Downs. He was pleased with how she looked Sunday. “She’s happy, healthy, came out of it in good order,” Cox said. Cox said Wet Paint likely would have three works leading up to the Kentucky Oaks, all at Churchill Downs. She will be looking to become the second straight filly to come out of the Oaklawn stakes program and win the Kentucky Oaks, following Secret Oath in 2022. Punchbowl, an unbeaten Cox trainee who has won a maiden special weight sprint and entry-level allowance route at Oaklawn, is set to make her stakes debut Friday in the Grade 1, $600,000 Ashland at Keeneland. Cox said Capella is on deck for the Grade 3, $250,000 Gazelle, a Kentucky Oaks points race Saturday at Aqueduct. Taxed ran second in the Fantasy, and her plans are to be determined, trainer Randy Morse said Sunday. “I’d like to find a different place to run than that Wet Paint,” he quipped. Taxed was running second to Wet Paint for the second time this season, following the Martha Washington. Taxed is 12th on the points list for the Kentucky Oaks, which has a maximum gate of 14. Morse said plans are to be determined, with Taxed to continue to train at Oaklawn. “We’ve got to wait until next weekend to see if we even get in,” he said of upcoming qualifiers for the Kentucky Oaks. “She seems to have come out of the race good. We’ll just have to wait and see.” Taxed earned a career-high Beyer of 85 in the Fantasy. Morse removed blinkers for the race Saturday. “She ran really good,” he said. “Taking the blinkers off, she relaxed more.”    Taxed is a daughter of Collected who races for Richard Bahde. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
