West Virginia Derby has full gate topped by N.Y. stakes winners Raise Cain, Lord Miles

Raise Cain and Lord Miles, who each won a Kentucky Derby prep at Aqueduct, were among an overflow field of 14 horses entered Tuesday in the Grade 3, $500,000 West Virginia Derby. The 1 1/8-mile race will be run Sunday night at Mountaineer Park.
The maximum gate for the field is 12, leaving Russian Hammer and Knockout Guy as also-eligibles.
Raise Cain won the Grade 3 Gotham in March and Lord Miles captured the Grade 2 Wood Memorial in April. For the West Virginia Derby, the horses drew posts on opposite ends of the starting gate. Lord Miles is set to break from post 2 under Arnaldo Bocachica. Raise Cain will start from stall 11 under Luan Machado.
The multiple graded stakes-placed Red Route One is making his first start since an eighth-place finish in the Belmont Stakes, while Tapit’s Conquest returns to stakes competition after winning a first-level allowance at Ellis Park.

One in Vermillion is a multiple stakes winner exiting a dead-heat finish for first in the Iowa Derby, a race in which he was placed second for interference in the stretch. Groveland exits an entry-level allowance win at Hawthorne ahead of his return to graded stakes company.

The West Virginia Derby has been moved to a Sunday card after being featured on a Saturday. It’s the eighth of nine races and shares a card with the Grade 3, $200,000 West Virginia Governor’s Stakes for 3-year-olds and up at 1 1/16 miles. First post is 5 p.m. Eastern.
The forecast is for a high of 91 degrees and a low of 61, with a 36 percent chance of light rain, according to a weather report on the website for Mountaineer.
