West Omaha was an easy winner of the $150,000 Silverbulletday Stakes and became trainer Brad Cox’s second filly to win a stakes race in the division during this meet and third 3-year-old filly to win on the Saturday card at Fair Grounds.  West Omaha, who paid $3.80 as the heavy favorite, traveled like a winner the entire trip, stalking the pace from fourth while about two paths off the rail, taking the measure of Miss Code West and Accommodate Eva at the head of the homestretch, and going on to a five-length win. Perfect Shot stalked the pace from the rail, came out in upper stretch, and rallied mildly for a distant second, with Sistina Chapel 1 1/2 lengths behind in third.  Off a slow half-mile split of 48.84, West Omaha was timed in 1:43.48 for one mile 70 yards on a fast track.   :: Bet with the Best! Earlier on the card, Cox sent out the 3-year-old filly Tarifa to win a first level allowance race in her third start, going the same distance off an even slower half-mile in 1:43.34. Perhaps as impressive as the two route winners Saturday was the first-time starter Ghalia Princess, who ran down another debuting filly, the well-meant favorite Motown Music, who cleared the maiden ranks Saturday. Ghalia Princess, a route-bred filly by American Pharoah, clocked a solid good 1:10.81 for six furlongs.  All this came one month after Alpine Princess had won the $100,000 Untapable Stakes by two lengths over West Omaha. Alpine Princess, who debuted for Cox at Saratoga last summer, got a slight freshening after the Untapable and could return in the Rachel Alexandra Stakes next month.  “We’ve got a good group right now. Hopefully they’ll all sort themselves out over the next month or two,” said Cox.  West Omaha, a Gary and Mary West homebred, is by West Coast out of Birthday Bash, by Medaglia d’Oro. She debuted Sept. 21 with a decent third going seven furlongs at Churchill Downs and won well second time out going the same distance. Saturday, Luis Saez riding for the first time, she raced more professionally and authoritatively. Last month, West Omaha lost position as the field passed the half-mile pole and went into the far turn, but in the Silverbulletday, she began her attack at about the same spot before engaging the leaders at the five-sixteenths pole. West Omaha also appeared to improve her head carriage Saturday and generally looked like a more professional racehorse.  The Silverbulletday is part of the Road to the Kentucky Oaks and the first five across the finish earned qualifying points toward the Oaks distributed 20, 10, 6, 4, and 2. Miss Code West finished fourth and Accommodate Eva fifth.  At this point, the 3-year-old filly dirt-route division is wide open. Cox has plenty of ammunition.  :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
