Welsch: Gulfstream Park horses to watch for week of Feb. 1
Blind Ambition
Trainer: Todd Pletcher
Last race: Jan. 28, 8th
Finish: 4th by 13 1/4
Beyer: 61
Like most Tapit offspring, he had issues at the break, stumbling badly to lose his best chance. Rushed up between horses to reach contention on the turn but could not sustain the bid behind a promising runaway winner.
Conquest Rapiduno
Trainer: Michael De Paulo
Last race: Jan. 27, 7th
Finish: 2nd by head
Beyer: 56
Found a winning spot, dropping in against low-level maiden claimers and shortening up to five furlongs on turf, only to drop a heartbreaking decision when narrowly defeated after taking up sharply down the backstretch and even harder near the inside on the final bend.
Spelling Bee King
Trainer: Lester Barbazon III
Last race: Jan. 16th, 3rd
Finish: 3rd by 10 1/4
Beyer: 45
He looked a lot more promising than the result might indicate, turning in a decent effort off the farm while going a mile in his career debut. Galloped out like a horse who will appreciate more distance and improve from the experience.
