Welsch: Going after Thursday's $200,000 pick five carryover

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - The $1 million Rainbow 6 carryover might be gone but the sequence that produced that winning ticket on Monday also led to a carryover in excess of $200,000 in the late pick five over the final five races Thursday at Gulfstream Park.
The pick five sequence consists of three turf races and two on the dirt, including the afternoon’s feature race, a modest six-furlong optional-claiming dash at six furlongs, which drew a field of eight.
Here is a look at Thursday’s pick five:

Race 6
This mid-level conditioned claimer at five furlongs on the turf lured a field of eight with STORMY NELLY getting top billing exiting a third-place finish against similar on Dec. 18. Picks up the red-hot Irad Ortiz in the irons and is working well for her return. LITTLE BELLA outran her odds when debuting against maiden $20,000 company last summer, rallied to win the race despite trouble, and has not raced since. But she has a steady string of works prepping for the return, the last two indicating she might belong with this kind off the bench. R KISS EM GOODBYE is the big question mark in the race but a must-use in the Pick-5 as she figures to be in front a long ways breaking on the rail. Has never run on turf and has only modest breeding for the going, but must respect the connections and her speed.
Race 7
Bottom-level filly and mare group of nine sprinters probably goes through WORTH AVENUE, who owns a considerable class edge dropping to this level for the first time. Add Ortiz to the mix and she figures to be well bet and is strictly the one to beat for this tag. BABY ICE has been on the fringes with this kind in her last couple of starts and might have a pace edge if aggressively handled from the outset. FANCY FOX has the turf to dirt angle working for her, although has yet to win against open company, with her most recent win coming on a wet track against conditioned claimers last fall at Churchill Downs.

Race 8
Back to the turf for another five-furlong conditioned claimer. SIR SEAMUS might be a single on many tickets taking big class plunge, with the turn back in distance perhaps the main question. Finished fourth in a key race going a mile in his most recent start. YOUSHOULDBESOLUCKY exits the same race when badly outrun after turning in sharp efforts against the same kind in his two previous starts. Hard to go beyond those two. Anyone looking for a third horse in this leg might try MR. EDGAR off the claim getting back on what appears to be his best surface.
Race 9
FLAT AWESOME JENNY is hard to fault in her present form. Comes off her two best yet and blew out well for this spot. R PREROGATIVE went too fast setting pace against same kind last time. Expect to see her sitting off the pace of MY SARASOTA STAR, who probably should be tossed in on deeper tickets out of respect for her abundant speed.
Race 10
The winning Rainbow 6 ticket on Monday had a single in the final leg, but a little extra coverage always is welcome in a race like this, a bottom-level maiden claimer for fillies and mares on the grass. Anything is likely to happen with this mix, although WILD ABOUT THIS is the most likely win candidate switching from the double bug to Hall of Fame rider Edgar Prado while exiting an improved effort against same kind three weeks earlier. ROSASPARKS is from a barn that went winless a year ago and is 0 for 3 at this meet, but dropping in company off a respectable two-turn debut against better. Not impossible and worth tossing in along with the logical contender ALWAYS LUCKY.
