ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Heading into this week, Rafael Hernandez maintained a slim 105-100 lead over apprentice Pietro Moran atop Woodbine’s jockey standings. Moran, on Light the Lamp, will try to catch Hernandez and the speedy Silent Reserve in Friday’s featured conditioned allowance. The five-furlong inner turf dash drew four others in the seventh on an eight-race card that has a 4:30 p.m. post time. Light the Lamp went 5 for 9 in 2023 before a winless eight-race campaign in 2024. The 6-year-old gelding has gotten back on the beam this year with three wins in six outings, including a victory at this level Sept. 1 where he earned a career-high 94 Beyer Speed Figure. Most recently, Light the Lamp was overmatched in the Grade 2 Nearctic, yet he wasn’t beaten all that far when fifth in a quality seven-horse field. Trained by Don MacRae, he breaks from post 1 and should get to run on some fresh ground with the temporary rail moving in from lane 3 to lane 2 this week. :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! Silent Reserve faded to fourth behind Light the Lamp after getting fried in a front-end battle Sept. 1 in his second try off a $32,000 claim by trainer Marty Drexler. He was also softened up in a speed duel most recently with current rival Ready to Collect, who prevailed with determination while Silent Reserve weakened late to third. Ready to Collect has been rejuvenated since joining trainer Ted Holder’s string in August. He finished a close third in his first try for Holder in the Aug. 17 Vice Regent Stakes and then won a nonwinners-of-three Ontario-sired allowance before doubling up in a first-level allowance as the favorite on Sept. 21. Jockey Jason Hoyte knows him well and can make the most of his tactical speed. The Drexler-trained Artemus Citylimits registered a 19-1 upset when annexing his first stakes in the $150,000 Vice Regent for Ontario-breds under Xarel Forde. The apprentice was also aboard when he vied for the lead with Silent Reserve before tiring to third Sept. 1. Expect a stalking or closing trip this time with Eswan Flores taking over on the durable 8-year-old. The late-blooming sophomore Classy War could add some fuel to the pace fire. After toiling over the winter at Gulfstream Park, he came up empty in an April 26 dirt experiment at Churchill Downs before romping over Ontario-sired and $40,000 maidens on the Tapeta here in May. He went on to prevail in an allowance with a $50,000 claiming option for 3-year-olds on June 29. Classy War was freshened by Mark Casse after running second in an open allowance for 3-year-olds on the main turf Aug. 8, when he found the stretch-out to seven furlongs to be too far. Ryan Munger inherits the mount from Sahin Civaci, who recently left Woodbine to ride full-time at Aqueduct. Rounding out the field is Roi Soleil, who hasn’t shown much since getting claimed for $40,000 by trainer Phil Hall in December. This will be his first start in three months. * Friday's card will feature a carryover of $104,054 in the pick five. The sequence starts with the second race, which has as post time 4:59 p.m. Eastern. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
