Saturday’s stakes schedule is loaded. The Grade 1, $500,000 Diana is the feature of the first Saturday of the Saratoga meet, supported by the Grade 3, $150,000 Sanford. The Grade 2, $750,000 Delaware Handicap is the richest race of the day and tops a Delaware Park card that includes four other stakes. The Grade 3, $500,000 Indiana Derby heads a terrific Indiana Grand card that also has five other stakes, most notably the Grade 3, $200,000 Indiana Oaks. And there are four stakes on the Arlington program, three of which are Grade 3, $150,000 events as well as stepping-stones to Arlington Million Day stakes next month – the American Derby, the Arlington Handicap, and the Modesty. Finally, the feature at Los Alamitos Race Course is the Grade 3, $150,000 Los Alamitos Derby, which lured Game Winner, last year’s champion 2-year-old male. Indiana Derby To say Mr. Money is red hot would be an understatement. His runaway victories in the Pat Day Mile and the Matt Winn in his last two starts were so impressive that, in my view, they made him one of the best 3-year-old males in the country right now. That, however, does not necessarily mean he’s a lock to win this. Mr. Money’s two big recent stakes scores came on the main track at Churchill Downs, the surface on which he also recorded his maiden win, his only other victory. Mr. Money must demonstrate he can be as effective outside of Louisville. Moreover, Mr. Money drew the outside post in a field of 11. If he were the lone speed or a deep closer, I wouldn’t be concerned with his post. But it could be an issue in a route like this, and with Mr. Money probably wanting to be fairly close early. Other potential pace players like Alwaysmining, Long Range Toddy, Gray Magician, and maybe even Eskenforit could park Mr. Money considerably wide around the first turn. Math Wizard is my play. Math Wizard is much improved since being claimed for the third straight time in late January to the point where he was a narrowly beaten second most recently in the Ohio Derby to Owendale. Granted, Math Wizard’s closing kick received a favorable pace setup in the Ohio Derby, but he should get another good pace setup Saturday night, and this time, he doesn’t have to worry about Owendale. Owendale went into the Ohio Derby off an excellent third in the Preakness, rallying wide on a track that strongly favored inside runners. Arlington Handicap There are many ways to go in this very well-matched field, but Bandua is the one I prefer. Bandua, who was simply overmatched last time against the likes of Bricks and Mortar when sixth in the 1 1/4-mile Manhattan, is cutting back slightly in distance Saturday. And that should suit him well. The last time Bandua raced on turf and at a distance close to as short as the 9 1/2 furlongs he travels here was in the Fair Grounds Handicap early this year. He finished a clear second that day to the talented Synchrony, and a repeat of that performance would be tough to match in this spot. Diana Stakes With Elate looking strong in the Del Cap at a short price, only a five-horse field in the Sanford, a tiny field of four in the Los Alamitos Derby, and the Diana resembling a Chad Brown intramural squabble with him training four of the six entrants (three of whom are owned by Peter Brant), I almost opted for the Glasgow Stakes, one of the undercard events at Delaware. Completed Pass, who mysteriously lacked any of his abundant early speed in a losing effort when a pick in this space last week in the Parx Dash, wheels right back and can wire the Glasgow field. But the Warrior is about discussing races of wide interest, so we are back to the Diana, and Brown’s three big entrants – Sistercharlie, Rushing Fall, and Homerique. Sistercharlie, last year’s champion turf female, makes her first start since winning the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf, and I’ll just say she needs one. Rushing Fall, beaten only once in nine starts, ran her best race yet last time in winning the Just a Game, but she’s never beaten this kind at this distance. That leaves Homerique, my pick. Homerique was top class last year in France and was very good in winning both of her U.S. starts this year. She has recency on her side, and the distance will certainly not be a concern.
