Saratoga | Race 3 | Post Time 2:20 p.m. (ET) Bosun (#3) is stepping up in class out of a victory against first-level allowance competition, but he still has to be considered the one to beat in this state-bred turf sprint. He faced some pretty strong rivals through the three starts against winners, including future stakes winner Friend ofthe Devil and Waralo, who has won three in a row on turf. Even last time, the form of his victory was flattered when runner-up Courtly Banker returned to win at the same level with a 109 TimeformUS Speed Figure, improving 6 points. This Joe Sharp trainee needs some pace to develop ahead of him, but he should be tough to hold off if the trip works out. A few others exit the July 24 race at this level won by the classy Set. Vacation Dance (#5) finished closest to the winner that day, closing steadily after working out a pretty good trip. The comment line suggests he had trouble, but he just took a minor bump on the backstretch and then rated with cover before unleashing his rally in the lane. He obviously handles the distance and has run some of his best races at Saratoga. His form is just fairly exposed at this point, so I don’t anticipate him offering much value. Seaver (#1) is the horse that had more trouble in that July 24 affair, since he was outrun early, tried to move along the inside on the backstretch, but got bumped by Vacation Dance and shuffled back. He had to wait for room on the turn, and then was finishing belatedly. He may lack the quickness for this trip at this stage of his career, but he should be finishing if pace develops. The TimeformUS Pace Projector is predicting a No Speed scenario with a horse who is unproven on turf leading. However, I think Clancy Fancy (#4) could have more to say about the early pace of this race, and that's a big reason why he's the horse I want to bet. I'm not quite sure what happened at the start of his last race, as he just seemed mildly unprepared and was slow into stride. That's not his preferred trip, but he still ran on gamely through the stretch, almost coming back to beat Vacation Dance at the end. It was his first turf start since one try on this course last summer, wehre he showed speed and faded. He's improved since then, and I think he deserves another chance on turf utilizing his preferred front-running style. He should get that opportunity switching to Joel Rosario.
