Webslinger clears maiden ranks with victory in Nownownow Stakes

Webslinger put his name in the conversation for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf on Saturday, when he won his maiden over 2-5 favorite Oxymore in the $500,000 Nownownow at Monmouth Park.

The one-mile turf race was the first start at two turns for Webslinger, who won by a half-length over Oxymore. It was another two and a half lengths back in third to Let’s Go Big Blue.

Webslinger ($30) was making the third start of his career in the Nownownow. He had one horse beat early after breaking from the widest post in the field of nine. Power Attack set fractions of 22.09 seconds for the opening quarter, 46.45 for the half-mile and 1:09.94 for six furlongs before being overtaken by the tracking stakes winner Oxymore,

Webslinger, meanwhile, launched his run around the final turn, He advanced three wide, then came five wide into the stretch. Webslinger took after Oxymore, who toted top weight of 121, and got past that one in the later stages. The winner, at 115 under the conditions of the race, covered the mile on firm ground in 1:35.09.

Dylan Davis was aboard for trainer Mark Casse.

Webslinger races for D.J. Stable, and the ownership said in a post-race interview broadcast by Monmouth that the horse would be considered for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf.

Webslinger is a son of Constitution who in his career debut finished fourth a maiden special weight sprint at six furlongs Aug. 6 at Ellis Park. He was moved to turf for his next start and finished second by a length in a maiden special weight over five and a half furlongs at Saratoga.

Webslinger picked up a first-place check of $300,000 for his maiden win Saturday, pushing his career bankroll to $319,500.
