Wayne Davis, 92, wins owner title at Louisiana Downs
Wayne T. Davis, the 92-year-old who races multiple Grade 3 winner Mocito Rojo, won the owner title at the Louisiana Downs meet, which closed Sept. 21. His stable won 25 races, according to a press release from the Bossier City, La., track.
Shane Wilson, who trains for Davis, won 55 races to rank as the meet’s leading conditioner. Carlos Lozada won the riding title with 84 wins and plans to ride next at Tampa Bay Downs before returning to Louisiana Downs, according to a press release.
Saenz wins title at Evangeline
Jockey Diego Saenz won 116 races during the recently concluded meet at Evangeline Downs in Opelousas, La., to lock up the riding title. He had 403 mounts and they earned a collective $1.8 million.
The meet’s leading trainer was Eduardo Ramirez with 44 wins and the leading owner was Red Rose Racing with 30 wins.

Evangeline will open a 53-date meet for Quarter Horses on Wednesday. The season, which includes 10 dates transferred from Fair Grounds, will continue through Dec. 30. The $1 million Louisiana Quarter Horse Breeders Association Louisiana Million, which is the richest Quarter Horse race in the state, is set for Dec. 18. Trials are Nov. 26.
◗ The Texas Thoroughbred Association has announced Jim McIngvale and Joe Straus Jr. as the co-winners of the T.I. “Pops” Harkins Award for lifetime achievement. In addition, Bill Tracy and Martha Claussen have been honored with the Allen Bogan Memorial Award as TTA Members of the Year for 2020. The pandemic will keep the traditional banquet from being held to honor both the human and previously announced Texas-bred champions for 2020, but a video presentation has been posted on Facebook.
◗ Lee Cyphers, the track veterinarian at Oaklawn since 1990, died last month, according to friends. He was 66. Cyphers had suffered a ruptured brain aneurysm in August, according to an obituary from the Hot Springs Funeral Home. The tribute also noted Cyphers was an Arkansas native who earned his degree from Louisiana State University.
