Watchyourownbobber paid $16.40 for his frontrunning win Saturday in the $75,000 Showing Up Stakes at Gulfstream Park West.

With Eddie Castro aboard, Watchyourownbobber broke sharply in the one-mile turf race for 3-year-olds. He held a half-length lead over Bluegrass Singer, who finished last after a half-mile in 48.46 seconds. He was in front at the eighth pole by 1 1/2 lengths and was all out while holding off Solemn Tribute, who came from a stalking position. The final margin was a half-length. My Point Exactly, third, moved into contention at the quarter-pole but couldn’t keep up.

The 2-1 favorite Courtier never looked like a serious threat while finishing eighth in the nine-horse field.

The final time over firm turf was 1:36.35.

It was the first stakes win for the son of Hard Spun who was claimed for $50,000 by trainer Mike Maker on behalf Ken and Sarah Ramsey last December. He was coming off a runner-up finish Sept. 26 in the Grade 3 Jefferson Cup at Churchill Downs.

It was a good day for Maker, who also won the $75,000 Cellar Shiraz with the longshot Susie Bee. She paid $47.80 for her 2 3/4-length win over the favored Quiet Kitten.

Ridden by Antonio Gallardo, Susie Bee was seventh during the early stages of the one-mile turf race for 3-year-old fillies that drew 14 horses. She moved into serious contention approaching the final turn, and after making a strong move from along the rail, she took over from Quiet Kitten midstretch. Quiet Kitten set the pace under pressure and couldn’t hold off the winner. She finished a head in front of Aljalela, who rallied from a stalking position to finish third.

The final time was 1:37.97.

Susie Bee, a first-time stakes winner, is owned by Calumet Farm.
