Warren's Joe T. has a lot going for him in Thursday feature

Randy Goulding|Sep 04, 2017

There is no obvious favorite in a $16,000 option-claiming race that will serve as Thursday’s feature at Gulfstream Park. The 1 1/16-mile race for 3-year-olds and up drew six horses and goes as race 8 on a nine-race card that begins at 1:15 Eastern.

For anyone wanting to take a stab at a horse at a decent price look no further than Warren’s Joe T.,who breaks from the rail with Jose Batista riding.

In a race with no confirmed frontrunners, he does have tactical speed and should get a nice trip from a forward position. The last time he went 1 1/16 miles he won an $8,000 claiming race at Santa Anita for trainer Jonathan Wong March 17.

He is now trained by Elizabeth Dobles and has made two starts at Gulfstream. He had a wide trip while finishing fourth in a one-mile $10,000 starter optional-claiming race July 14, and fifth after breaking from the rail going seven furlongs for the same condition Aug. 11.

Among Warren’s Joe T.’s main opponents is Fearless Dragon, who showed more speed than usual in his runner-up finish going seven furlongs in a $50,000 starter race July 30. He could make some noise if he breaks alertly from post 3 with Edgard Zayas riding.

A 4-year-old trained by Saffie Joseph, Fearless Dragon has never won a race longer than seven furlongs, but he earned a career-best 88 Beyer Speed Figure when he was the runner-up going one mile in a first-level allowance race at Aqueduct April 8.

KEY CONTENDERSWarren’s Joe T., by AffirmativeLast 3 Beyers: 62-72-69◗ He is capable of winning this if he brings his best stuff. He could also be sitting on a peak performance in the third start of his form cycle for Dobles, who has been spotting her horses in live spots since she got her first win on Oct. 20 last year at Gulfstream Park West. Fearless Dragon, by SpeightstownLast 3 Beyers: 68-78-62◗ Following his loss as the heavy favorite July 30 he worked a bullet half-mile Aug. 20 and could make amends with the right kind of trip.drf formulator fact: The past two years, Joseph has a 28 percent strike rate with horses going from a sprint to a route.

◗ He is trending in the right direction for trainer Stanley Gold, and being a lightly raced 3-year-old he might not have run his best race.

◗ He rallied to finish third going six furlongs at this level Aug. 18, and the 75 Beyer he received is the best last-race figure in the field.

Last 3 Beyers: 69-74-75

◗ Trained by Gustavo Delgado, he has just one win, but he will appreciate the easier company after finishing unplaced in back-to-back stakes races. He also won’t mind getting back on dirt after finishing seventh while running on turf for the first time in the $75,000 Tortugas Aug. 19.
