Warren hurt in spill

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Jockey Ron Warren, Jr. suffered a compound fracture of his right tibia and fibula and a broken left hip in a Friday night spill at Bay Meadows.

He underwent emergency surgery that lasted until 5 a.m. Saturday at nearby Stanford Hospital to repair the tibia and fibula and underwent a second surgery on his hip, which involved placing a pin into the bone. Both surgeries were successful, according to Bay Meadows track physician Dr. David Seftel.

Warren, 40, was to undergo additional surgery on his leg Sunday.

Warren was injured when his mount in the fourth race, Red Legend, fractured his right front cannon bone and fell approaching the sixteenth pole. Mathematical, ridden by Ryan Morris, couldn't avoid the fallen horse and wound up falling on Warren. Morris was knocked from his mount when he was struck in the head by one of Red Legend's hind legs.

Morris and Mathematical escaped serious injury. Red Legend was euthanized.

Warren recently formed an organization, the California Jockeys' Guild, that intends to compete with the national Jockeys' Guild. Warren's group hopes to manage an annual payment from the state that provides health benefits for jockeys.

Warren, a perennial member of the top 10 in the local jockey colony, had missed riding the month of January after he suffered a separated shoulder on Dec. 30. He won the first race of the current Bay Meadows meeting on Wednesday.
