SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – In No Nay Hudson and Eye Witness, trainer Wesley Ward likely has the two top choices for Sunday’s Grade 3, $175,000 Quick Call Stakes at Saratoga. But the 10-horse field appears to have plenty of depth to it with horses like Gaslight Dancer and Two of a Kind likely offering a bit more value in the 5 1/2-furlong turf race for 3-year-olds. In his seasonal debut, at Keeneland in April, Gaslight Dancer beat No Nay Hudson by 4 1/4 lengths in the Palisades Stakes. In the William Walker on May 13 at Churchill Downs, No Nay Hudson turned the tables on Gaslight Dancer, beating him by 1 1/2 lengths. Mike Maker, the trainer of Gaslight Dancer, said in the William Walker his horse “kind of got stuck inside, had to wait for them to kick on before he could run. He ran a credible race, I expect another big effort.” Gaslight Dancer gave a big effort in the Palisades rallying five wide from off the pace under Tyler Gaffalione to win by 1 1/2 lengths over Two of a Kind. “He had a ground-saving trip, a lot better trip than the second race,” Maker said. “The outside draw [Sunday] with plenty of speed, maybe we’ll get a nice setup.” Gaffalione rides Gaslight Dancer from post 10. :: DRF's 2023 Saratoga headquarters: Previews, past performances, picks, recaps, news, and more. Two of a Kind is well named since he had two similar runner-up finishes in the Palisades and William Walker. The difference was he came from off the pace in the Palisades while he set the pace in the William Walker. “I thought the first time, through circumstances, he put himself back, but it was very pleasing to see,” trainer Brian Lynch said. “The other day, he broke so sharp, just put him where he was comfortable. If I had my druthers, I’d rather see him come from off of it a little bit.” Julien Leparoux rides Two of a Kind from post 5. No Nay Hudson, second in the Skidmore here last summer, seemed much better with an off-the-pace trip in the William Walker as opposed to the pace-prompting trip in the Palisades. “He is coming into this race in good order and is training very well,” Ward said. “We will take him from off the pace again and hopefully get to the outside turning for home. If they go fast up front, we will be rolling late.” James Graham rides No Nay Hudson from the rail. Ward also sends out Eye Witness, who has won three in a row, including the Paradise Creek Stakes going seven furlongs on May 20 at Belmont Park. He may appreciate the turnback to 5 1/2 furlongs on Sunday. “He is breezing well at Keeneland and has an excellent chance to keep his winning streak going,” said Ward, who has Jose Ortiz to ride from post 3. :: Visit the Saratoga Handicapping Store for Past Performances, Clocker Reports, Picks, Betting Strategies, and more.
