War Bomber ($38.80) upsets Seagram Cup

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Longshot War Bomber wired a quality field under Sahin Civaci in Sunday’s Grade 3, $150,000 Seagram Cup at Woodbine.
War Bomber broke sharply from post 2 and shook loose on the lead as Clayton took up the chase in second under Antonio Gallardo.
Clayton joined War Bomber up front at the top of the stretch and poked his head in front, but War Bomber repelled the challenge and a late bid from Artie’s Storm to score by three-quarters of a length, in a time of 1:43.26.
Clayton weakened to third, and was followed by favored Frosted Over, Cash Dividend, Special Forces, Carrothers and Tap It to Win.
War Bomber proved to be one of the best claims of the 2021 Woodbine meet when he captured the Toronto Cup Stakes after getting claimed for $25,000 by owner Bruno Schickedanz.

Schickedanz supplemented War Bomber to the Seagram after trainer Norm McKnight and assistant trainer Brad McKnight stressed how good the son of War Front was doing following his third in a July 23 conditioned allowance.
“We told (Civaci) there might not be any speed in here,” Schickedanz said. “Last time, the horse wanted to go to the front, but the jockey held him back. I think he used up a little bit of energy. Today, he let him go, and it turned out to be the right move.”
War Bomber paid $38.80 and earned $90,000.
*** Favored Sister Seagull caught pacesetter Strega in the final strides to win her first stakes by a neck in Sunday’s $250,000 Bison City, the middle leg of the Canadian Triple Tiara.
Sister Seagull ($5.40) covered the 1 1/16 miles in 1:44.48 under Antonio Gallardo. The daughter of Hard Edge who was coming off a distant second to Moira in the Woodbine Oaks banked $150,000 for owners Sean and Dorothy Fitzhenry.
Pioneer’s Edge finished third in the five-horse field of Canadian-bred 3-year-old fillies.
