Wambui in career best form for Miss Princess Handicap
Wambui did not have much of a 3-year-old season in 2020, racing three times and winning once.
Her 2021 season has been much brighter, an indication she may have a role in the leading races for older fillies and mares at Los Alamitos as the year progresses.
Sunday, Wambui will be a heavy favorite to win for the fourth time in her last five starts in the $45,000 Miss Princess Handicap for fillies and mares at 350 yards, the richest race of her career.
The Miss Princess Handicap, which drew a field of six, is run at a good distance for Wambui.
Trained by Scott Willoughby for owner and breeder Ed Allred, Wambui won an allowance race at 350 yards in her first start of the year on Jan. 3, and was second in the $35,000 Denim N Diamonds Handicap to the multiple stakes winner Kiss Thru Fire at 350 yards on Feb. 20.

Wambui won the minor New Moon Stakes at 330 yards by a neck on April 11, beating Fayvorite Chick, who will be the second choice in the Miss Princess Handicap.
Jockey Victor Salazar rides Wambui for the first time on Sunday, replacing Oscar Andrade Jr. who has relocated to Ruidoso Downs for that track’s upcoming spring-summer meeting.
The Miss Princess Handicap is the final race on an eight-race program that begins at 6:15 p.m. Pacific. Wagering is available through DRFBets.com.
Wambui, a winner of 5 of 15 starts, breaks from post 3, while Fayvorite Chick is well drawn to the outside. All Prettied Up, third in the New Moon, starts from the rail.
Fayvorite Chick, trained by Matt Fales, will have her eighth consecutive appearance in a stakes in the Miss Princess, but has yet to win at that level. During that span, Fayvorite Chick has been second by a head or a neck three times since last July.
Five of the six runners are by top stallion Favorite Cartel. Registrant, second in an allowance race for 3-year-old fillies on April 2, is by Kiddy Up. Registrant will have stakes debut in the Miss Princess Handicap for Allred and Willoughby. She is the lone 3-year-old in the field.
