The aptly named Walkathon strolled along on the easiest of leads and scored a wire-to-wire upset in the Grade 3, $150,000 Endeavour Stakes on Saturday at Tampa Bay Downs.  The Endeavour, a 1 1/16-mile grass race for older fillies and mares, had an obvious early pace void, but the question was which horse, relatively unaccustomed to leading, would try to capitalize. Walkathon, who’d been an early leader only once in her 11-start career, was the one, jockey Antonio Gallardo seizing an early advantage that he and his mount never would relinquish.  Full Count Felicia, sweated up and looking uncomfortable, was wrangled back to race a half-length outside Walkathon through a pedestrian tempo, the quarter going in 24.40, the half in a very slow 49.33. Full Count Felicia was finished in upper stretch, leaving Be My Sunshine, who’d race in the pocket just behind Walkathon, as the only danger. Steered outside past the three-sixteenths marker, Be My Sunshine tried to make a run, but Walkathon had too much left, zipping her final 2 1/2 furlongs in a snappy 28.29 to post a 1 1/2-length victory.  :: Bet the races with a $200 First Deposit Match + FREE All Access PPs! Walkathon, however, was clear of her rival and Tampa Bay stewards let the result stand.  Sparkle Blue finished solidly from sixth around the far turn to nab third, a neck behind Be My Sunshine. Implicated was fourth, a head in front of her Chad Brown-trained stablemate, Consumer Spending, who was favored at 3-2 and, while finishing fastest, essentially had no chance racing from last behind the glacial pace. Full Count Felicia was a disappointing sixth, beating only Willakia.   Winning time over a firm course was 1:41 and Walkathon paid $20.80.  Ian Wilkes trains Walkathon for her breeder, Whitham Thoroughbreds. Walkathon, by Twirling Candy out of Walkabout, by Stroll, won for the fourth time in a dozen starts, adding the Endeavour to a Grade 3 win in June 2022 in the Grade 3 Regret. Walkathon didn’t race for about 15 months after the Regret, winning Saturday for the first time since her long break.  :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
