Walcott rides Tempered Sapphire, Consecrate to wins by combined 25 lengths
Leading jockey Rico Walcott had an easy time Saturday winning the $49,900 Madamoiselle for fillies and mares and the $48,980 Northlands Oaks by a combined 25 lengths.
In the 1 1/16-mile Madamoselle, Walcott guided Tempered Sapphire, $12.50, to a 13 3/4-length win over Tell Me Lies. The heavily favored Saturday Nite Ride, carrying 128 pounds, finished a dull third in the four-horse field.
Tempered Sapphire stalked an honest pace set by Tell Me Lies before taking complete control of the race on the stretch turn.
Trained by Rod Cone, Tempered Sapphire posted a final time of 1:46.94.
Walcott brought Consecrate from off the pace to score an 11 1/4-length victory over 45-1 longshot Sollie Go Nee Nee in the Northlands Oaks. She paid $5.20 as a slight favorite over Via Bendita who finished third in the one-mile race for 3-year-old fillies.
The final time was 1:41.30.
Consecrate was making her second start at Northlands for trainer Greg Tracy. Prior to finishing third June 20 in the $48,000 R. K. Smith Handicap, she had raced in California, where her only win came in a $75,000 maiden claiming race at Santa Anita for trainer Bob Baffert.
** Partly due to Saturday Nite Ride running a dull race in the Madamoiselle, the pick five carried over for the third day. Going into Saturday’s card, the total carryover is $24,499. The Pick 5 has a $1 minimum and has a low 10 percent take-out rate. The pick five begins on the first race.
