Wakefield, Adventurous Lady take Texas Futurity wins
GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - Wakefield and Adventurous Lady won the richest 2-year-old stakes of the Lone Star Park meet on Sunday when each captured a $100,000 division of the Texas Thoroughbred Futurity.
The races were part of the annual Stars of Texas Day program of four restricted stakes worth a total of $300,000.
Wakefield ($5.80) is now undefeated in two starts after he backed up an impressive maiden win with a length victory over E Rated on Sunday. Wakefield tracked E Rated through an opening quarter in 22.13 seconds and a half-mile in 45.76 and pushed past that rival in the later stages while covering five furlongs on a fast track in 58.46 seconds.
“This horse is a very nice horse,” winning rider Richard Eramia said. “He’s got a lot of class.”
Karl Broberg trains Wakefield for Jerry Namy. It capped a productive afternoon for the Broberg barn, which also ran third in the fillies division with Silver Moon Rising. Wakefield entered the colts and geldings division off a 1 1/2-length debut win May 24 at Lone Star.
“I was thinking if we had a clean trip that we were going to be really tough,” Broberg said. “It worked out and I’m just so thankful. Jerry Namy’s been so kind to me. He’s been one of my owners from Day 1. He’s one of the fellows that give me a chance with nicer horses, and I am glad we were able to get it done.”
Wakefield earned $64,388 for the win. He’s a son of Munnings. Broberg said the horse will now be based at Remington Park. Lone Star closes next Sunday.
Lullaby Bling finished third in the colts and geldings division, two lengths behind E Rated.
Adventurous Lady ($3.80) won her maiden in the fillies division by 3 3/4 lengths over Silvercents. It was another 2 1/2 lengths back to Silver Moon Rising in third.
Adventurous Lady set a pressured pace, putting up fractions of 21.76 seconds for the opening quarter and 45.60 for the half-mile. She went on to cover the five furlongs in 58.60 seconds. Ricardo Santana Jr. was aboard for trainer Steve Asmussen, and the win was one of three the men had on the card together Sunday.
“I know my filly’s got a lot of talent,” Santana said in a post-race interview with Lone Star television host Dave Appleton.
Adventurous Lady was making her third career start, after finishing a respective fourth and second in two maiden special weight races at Churchill Downs. She is a daughter of Kantharos and races for Jerry Durant.
Lone Star offered a $50,000 guaranteed pool on its fifty-cent late pick four and the all-stakes sequence returned $115.45. The final pool was $76,963.
