W W Fitzy might give turf a shot in Powder Break Stakes

Without a viable option on dirt or synthetic – two surfaces over which she has won – W W Fitzy could make her turf debut in Saturday’s $75,000 Powder Break Stakes at Gulfstream Park.
W W Fitzy, a 4-year-old Illinois-bred daughter of Well Positioned, won an open-company allowance going a mile on dirt by eight lengths April 3 at Gulfstream, earning a career-best 90 Beyer Speed Figure.

Trainer Scott Becker said that performance “exceeded expectations a little bit,” especially after the filly was beaten nearly 10 lengths in the Grade 3 Hurricane Bertie three weeks earlier.
“I was puzzled by that race,” Becker said. “I thought she’d be in the race more. I don’t have an excuse for it. Sometimes it happens.”
W W Fitzy is 6 for 10 on dirt and 1 for 3 over synthetic surfaces. The one victory came in an Illinois-bred stakes at Arlington last summer. Becker said that he trained W W Fitzy’s dam, Stormy Fitz, who ran respectably in a low-level claimer on turf.
“She’s doing good, so we’ll take a little shot,” Becker said.
On May 7, W W Fitzy worked five furlongs in 1:00.60 over Gulfstream’s main track, the fastest of seven works at the distance.
Entries for the Powder Break are to be taken Wednesday. One mare being mentioned for the race is Got Stormy, a Grade 1 winner against males who was a finalist for the Eclipse Award in the female turf division in 2019.
