Three races removed from a minor stakes win, Vlahos starts in an allowance race at 6 1/2 furlongs at Los Alamitos on Sunday with an excellent chance for a third career win. The program is closing day of the Los Alamitos daytime summer meeting. Del Mar opens its summer meeting on July 18. There is no live daytime Thoroughbred racing in California on the weekend of July 12-13. Vlahos won the restricted Clocker’s Corner Stakes at six furlongs at Santa Anita on Jan. 25 in his first start in two months. The Clocker’s Corner Stakes was scheduled for turf, but run on a wet-fast track because of rain. Sunday’s allowance race will be the first start for Vlahos in two months, since he finished fourth by a length in an allowance race at 6 1/2 furlongs at Santa Anita on May 4. Vlahos will start from the inside post in a field of six. A 4-year-old, Vlahos will start for trainer Leandro Mora, who typically is an assistant to Doug O’Neill. Beginning Sunday, O’Neill is serving a seven-day suspension for violating a rule pertaining to veterinary exams prior to a workout earlier this year. Mora said on Friday that the post position is a concern for Vlahos. :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! I wish we could have an outside post, but we have no choice.” Vlahos was always near the front in the Clocker’s Corner Stakes, winning by 1 1/4 lengths. Vlahos was later third in an allowance race at six furlongs on turf on March 15 after setting the pace, and last of five after leading to the turn in the Grade 3 San Carlos Stakes two weeks later. Vlahos could be joined on the lead by Nesso’s Lastharrah, who has not started since last August. Nesso’s Lastharrah has been transferred from trainer Jeff Mullins to Peter Eurton since his last start. Nesso’s Lastharrah has won three of his last four starts on turf and dirt at distances ranging from six furlongs to a mile. A winner of 4 of 11 starts, Nesso’s Lastharrah won his last dirt start in a starter allowance at six furlongs at Santa Anita in March 2024. Nesso’s Lastharrah led throughout that race. Eurton said this race is a prep for the Del Mar meeting. “I think he’s a turf horse,” Eurton said. “He’s very fresh and happy. I want to get a race into him. We’re going into it open-minded.” A quick pace will suit See Through It, who starts from the outside post. A winner of 12 of 44 starts, including the El Dorado Shooter Stakes at six furlongs on the synthetic track at Golden Gate Fields in February 2023, See Through It is a closer. See Through It, who is trained by Genaro Vallejo, won an allowance race at 6 1/2 furlongs in a 15-1 upset at Santa Anita in March and was second in the same race as Vlahos on May 2. In his most recent race, See Through It finished last of six in a six-furlong allowance race on turf at Santa Anita on May 25. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
