Vitali mulling Breeders' Cup decisions
MIAMI - Trainer Marcus Vitali said he was considering his options for Grade 1 winner Lochte following his second-place finish as the odds-on favorite in a one-mile allowance race at Gulfstream Park West on Sunday. One of those options for Lochte, who was beaten 1 1/4 lengths by former claimer Dreams Cut Short, is the Breeders’ Cup Mile.
Vitali said he also must decide whether to send Valid to Santa Anita for the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile following his victory Saturday in the Eight Miles West.
Vitali and his regular rider, Orlando Bocachica, dominated their respective divisions during the opening week of the meet. Vitali won six races over the first six days of the session, while Bocachica sits atop the jockeys’ standings with nine wins entering Thursday’s card.
◗ A field of 12 topped by the multiple stakes winner Best Plan Yet and the multiple stakes-placed Little Daddy was drawn for Saturday’s $90,000 Showing Up Stakes for 3-year-olds going a mile on turf. The Showing Up shares top billing on the card with its filly counterpart, the $90,000 Cellars Shiraz, which lured a dozen fillies topped by the Grade 2-placed Daring Kathy.
◗ There will be a guaranteed Rainbow 6 jackpot of $50,000 along with a carryover of $1,736 in the Super Hi 5 when racing resumes at Gulfstream Park West on Thursday. Monday’s pick five returned $11,615.
