Two 4-year-old fillies made the $75,000 Sheer Drama Handicap a two-horse race at Gulfstream Park on Saturday. It took a powerful surge to get around 3-5 favorite Haulin Ice, but Vincey Girl gained a 3 3/4-length victory for trainer Jose D’Angelo. Vincey Girl entered the Sheer Drama in search of her first stakes victory in a steady 4-year-old campaign. In the $75,000 Musical Romance at Gulfstream in June, she finished 3 1/2 lengths behind Haulin Ice, but with the right setup on Saturday, she finally broke through. “I always thought my filly belongs there,” D’Angelo said. “She’s kept company with these fillies. I spoke with my owners and I told them that with the right pace, she had a chance to win the race.”  The complexion of the Sheer Drama changed dramatically when Rumours Have It and 26-1 longshot Poiema tore out of the gate and entered a blistering speed duel. The front-running pair completed an opening quarter-mile in 21.71 and were 2 1/2 lengths ahead of Haulin Ice, who was stalking in third in a flight by himself. :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! Haulin Ice had a 2 1/2-length advantage over the other closers and began making up ground on the leaders into the far turn of the seven-furlong sprint. Poiema was already fading when Haulin Ice came calling, and Rumours Have It, a 10 1/4-length allowance winner last time out, lasted only slightly longer before fading himself. Haulin Ice and jockey Edgard Zayas seemed poised to pull away with ease for trainer Saffie Joseph Jr., until Vincey Girl and jockey Edwin Gonzalez began their charge, saving all the ground around the far turn and swinging powerfully into the stretch. Haulin Ice tried to maintain a receding lead in the stretch, but in a flash Vincey Girl powered past and cruised home to win with plenty left. She completed the seven furlongs in 1:24.03 and paid $9 to win. The six behind Vincey Girl and Haulin Ice were essentially in a race of their own by the time the field turned for home. Nerazurri, an 11-1 outsider trained by Angel Quiroz, finished 3 1/2 lengths behind Haulin Ice, but made up late ground to finish third. The fourth- and fifth-place finishers, Puckered and Gallop d’Hermes, went off at odds of over 90-1. Several trainers intended to use the Sheer Drama as a prep for the Grade 2 Princess Rooney at Gulfstream on Sept. 20. D’Angelo confirmed that he was always pointing to that race, and Vincey Girl’s triumph Saturday sets her up well for a class test at the same seven-furlong distance. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
