Vicki Vallencourt owns best resume in Panthers

Dave Basler|Jun 12, 2002

ALTOONA, Iowa - Seven 3-year-old fillies headed by Hi Tech Honeycomb and Vicki Vallencourt are set to go in Friday night's one-mile Panthers Stakes at Prairie Meadows.

Hi Tech Honeycomb enters the Panthers, a $60,000 race, off a fast-closing second-place finish on the turf in a $65,000 allowance race at a mile, May 25 at Churchill Downs.

Hi Tech Honeycomb seems equally effective on dirt or turf. She won her maiden race at Friday's distance on the dirt at Arlington Park last summer and finished third in the Ocala Breeders' Championship for 3-year-old fillies in March on the dirt. She also is a winner on turf. Ken McPeek trains Hi Tech Honeycomb, a daughter of Meadow Monster.

Overall, Hi Tech Honeycomb has compiled a record of 2-3-1 from nine starts good for more than $98,000 in earnings. McPeek has named Sidney LeJeune Jr. to ride in the Panthers.

Vicki Vallencourt may be the one to beat on Friday. She enters off a runner-up effort against allowance company at Hawthorne on May 20 in a 1 1/16-mile event, her first career start around two turns.

Vicki Vallencourt is the most accomplished filly in the field, having won two stakes last year and finishing third in the Grade 2 Beaumont Stakes at Keeneland in April. Hugh Robertson trains Vicki Vallencourt, who has won three of eight career starts and more than $168,000. Chris Emigh will be in from Chicago for the mount.

The Panthers is far from a two-horse race, as there are three other stakes winners entered in the field: No Turbulence, For Rubies, and Iowa-bred One Fine Shweetie.

For Rubies may be the most likely of the three to pull off an upset. She enters off back-to-back wins, one of which was the Goldfinch Stakes here on opening night, April 26. The Panthers will be her first career start around two turns for trainer Lynn Whiting.
