'Vicki' star of Ladies' Night

Bill Hodtwalker|Nov 08, 2001

ANDERSON, Ind. - Saturday's Hoosier Debutante, which will carry a $100,000 purse for the second consecutive year, has drawn a wide-open field of 11 2-year-old fillies, including four stakes winners and three other stakes-placed runners.

The six-furlong feature has been carded as the fourth race on the 11-race "Ladies' Night" card.

Races 7 through 9 will feature a female jockey challenge. Locals Cindy Noll, Beth Butler, Joddie Fortner, Rhonda Collins, and others will compete against imports Greta Kuntzweiler, Zoe Cadman, and Cindy Herman-Medina.

Trained by Hugh Robertson, Vicki Vallencourt brings the strongest credentials to the Debutante. A winner of three of four starts, Vicki Vallencourt has scored stakes wins in the Top Flight Stakes at Arlington and, most recently, a 4 1/2-length win in the Indian Summer Stakes at Keeneland.

A daughter of Regal Classic owned by Ron and Ricki Rashinski, Vicki Vallencourt has drawn post 11 with Mark Guidry set to ride. Her stalking style should be well suited by the abundance of early speed to her inside.

Iowa-bred Orphan Lover, trained by Paul Pearson for the River Ridge Ranch, brings a mark of 2-2-1 from five starts with Mike Morgan set to ride from post 8. A daughter of Friendly Lover, Orphan Lover was second in the Iowa Sorority for statebreds at Prairie Meadows. She returned to win her maiden in a romp by nearly 10 lengths, and then stepped into open company to capture the Prairie Meadows Debutante in early October.

Orphan Lover should find plenty of company on the lead. Ghost Queen, Betty Bird, Friona, and Spanish Hound appear determined to contest what should be a swift pace in the Debutante.

Iffy, trained by Joe Cain, was second to Orphan Lover in the Prairie Meadows Debutante and also merits strong consideration. A versatile daughter of Is It True, Iffy usualy comes from just off the pace or from well back. Leading rider Terry Thompson has the mount from post 5.
