Veterinarian fined, suspended

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - The New York stewards suspended veterinarian Camilo Sierra for 30 days and fined him $1,500 for submitting health certificates for horses he failed to examine. The suspension, which was to take effect Tuesday, was reduced to 20 days for Sierra waiving his right of appeal.

The stewards said Sierra entered health certificates for the horses New York Bourbon, Sky Ace, and Too Much Malibu, who were trying to enter the grounds of Aqueduct on Oct. 31, without having examined them. New York Bourbon and Too Much Malibu are unraced 2-year-olds. Sky Ace finished sixth in a $25,000 maiden claimer here Dec. 14.

State steward Steve Lewandowski said a different veterinarian examines the horses and submitted proper health certificates before they were allowed on the grounds.
