Vernon: Woodside Charm impressive with NYSS win

webmaster|Aug 23, 2018

Woodside Charm (Verlin Yoder) remained unbeaten with a win in a leg of the New York Sire Stakes (NYSS) for freshman trotting fillies, as Vernon Downs hosted two divisions on Thursday (August 23). Both divisions raced for a purse of $56,500.

Quincy Blue Chip (Jim Morill Jr.) charged out to the early lead in the second division of NYSS. Woodside Charm ($2.60) went first-over and took control as they headed for the backstretch. Owned and trained by Yoder, she led them to a half in 57 3/5. Leading by two lengths after they went to three-quarters in 1:26 3/5, she found another gear as they hit the top of the stretch, winning going away in a lifetime best time of 1:54 3/5. Stella Jane (Jason Bartlett) came up to finish second. Quincy Blue Chip held on for third money.

Woodside Charm is a 2-year-old filly by Chapter Seven-Fireworks Hanover. She has yet to be tested in her young career. She has won all three of her starts with ease.

In the first division of the NYSS, Hanna Dreamgirl (Jim Morrill Jr) went right to the front hitting the first quarter in 27 4/5. Sensibility (Charlie Norris) followed in the pocket with Safe Word (Jeff Gregory) in third. Hanna Dreamgirl, who is owned by Ken Jacobs and trained by Linda Toscano, continued to control the race hitting the half in 56 and three-quarters in 1:29 2/5. Sensibility popped the pocket and made her move but had to settle for second best as Hanna Dreamgirl cruised to the win in 1:57 1/5. Hot Chapter (Marcus Miller) was third.

Hanna Dreamgirl is a 2-year-old filly by Chapter Seven-Shipps Empress. She now has two wins, a second and five thirds in eight career starts.

Linda Toscano had a training double on the night. Her other win came with Global Pageant ($5.00), who was driven by Scott Zeron.

Vernon Downs returns to live racing on Friday (August 24) with an 11 race card starting at 6:10 p.m.
