SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Patience turned out to be a virtue with Venetta, who was unraced at 2 but became a stakes winner in just her third career start after rallying off a protracted pace duel to register a 1 1/4-length victory over the odds-on Hot Currency in Wednesday’s $200,000 Bouwerie Stakes at Saratoga. Venetta did not launch her career until March 27 of her 3-year-old season, finishing a late-running and promising second following an eventful trip. She returned five weeks later and showed a different dimension, battling on the front end nearly every step of the way before emerging with a game head decision over the well-regarded Careless Whisper. She was pounded to 2-5 favoritism on both occasions. Venetta benefited from a perfectly orchestrated trip under regular rider Kendrick Carmouche in the seven-furlong Bouwerie. She raced within easy striking distance of the embattled leaders Galinda and Hot Currency before angling wide and running down Hot Currency in late stretch to win going away. :: DRF Belmont Stakes Packages: Save big on PPs, Clocker Reports, Betting Strategies, and more. Hot Currency engaged the once-beaten Galinda from the outset, dueled that rival through a 45.40 opening half-mile split, edged clear briefly through midstretch before succumbing grudgingly at the end. It was another three lengths further back to the tiring Galinda, who finished third of six. Venetta, a 3-year-old New York-bred daughter of Yaupon, is trained by Danny Gargan for Senegal Racing.  She completed seven furlongs on a fast track in 1:22.63 seconds and paid $10.62. ”We needed to take our time with her,” Gargan said. “We knew she could run from the start. Obviously, you can look at her odds, she was so heavily bet in her first two starts. It just took a little while.” Gargan said he was pleased with the way the race developed and happy he was able to stretch her out to seven furlongs for the first time in the Bouwerie. “A lot of people criticize the Yaupons, they think they don’t want to go long, but this one wants to,” Gargan predicted. “I believe the further she goes, the better she will get, that we haven’t seen the best of her yet. “The next one in the series is at Finger Lakes and it’s a mile and one-sixteenth. She likes to sit and relax so she’s going to like that too.” Gargan was referring to the New York Oaks at Finger Lakes on July 13. :: Get an edge with DRF Clocker Reports straight from the morning workouts.
