Velocity retired

Velocity, the winner of the Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks in August, recently was diagnosed with an ankle injury that will force her retirement. She is scheduled to be offered at auction at the Fasig-Tipton November Sale in Kentucky on Nov. 3.

Trainer Michael McCarthy said Velocity did not require surgery.

Owned by Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, Velocity won 3 of 5 starts and earned $274,800. By Nyquist, Velocity had her final start in the $303,000 Del Mar Oaks at 1 1/8 miles on turf on Aug. 16. Dismissed at 35-1, Velocity closed from sixth in a field of 11 to win by a half-length.

Following that race, Aron Wellman, managing partner of Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, said Velocity was a candidate for the Grade 1 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup at Keeneland on Oct. 11.

Velocity had one workout following the Del Mar Oaks, going a half-mile in 50.40 seconds at Santa Anita on Sept. 4, before the injury was detected.
