Velasquez wins six: Equals Calder record

MIAMI, Fla. - Jockey Cornelio Velasquez tied a Tropical at Calder record by winning six races on Sunday's program.

Velasquez joined Jacinto Vasquez, Rene Douglas and Javier Castellano, all of whom won six races on a single card during the Tropical meet.

Velasquez won five of his six races in succession, beginning with Fight Over Sea in the fourth race and continuing with Jason's Love, Born Mighty, Maliziosa in the $44,525 Opera Diva Stakes and True Hope. After finishing second aboard Fiery Sweep in the ninth race, Velasquez equaled the record by guiding Ebony Breeze to an easy win in the tenth race.

Velasquez's big day extended his advantage over M R Cruz and Eibar Coa in defense of his Tropical at Calder riding title.
