Velasquez back in N.Y. as agent

Mike Welsch|Oct 08, 2002

Hall of Fame rider turned jockey agent Jorge Velasquez will return to New York next week, bringing leading apprentice Luis Chavez along with him for the opening of the Aqueduct fall-winter meet on Oct. 23. Chavez is the fourth leading rider at Calder's current summer-fall meet with 66 victories .

"I'm going back home," said Velasquez, who rode nearly 7,000 winners during his illustrious career. "I've been down here for five years but my wife and I have a lot of family back in New York. Luis is a very good rider and I look forward to having a lot of success with him this winter. I never liked the cold weather but at least as an agent I can put on a lot of clothes when I work. And if we're doing good, those paychecks will warm you up right away."
