Vekoma, Point of Honor poised for big seasons for Weaver stable

Vekoma and Point of Honor, two of George Weaver’s graded stakes winners from a year ago, got their seasons off to solid starts, and the trainer is anxiously awaiting a schedule to map out plans for them.
Vekoma, last year’s Grade 2 Blue Grass Stakes winner, came off an 11-month layoff to win the Sir Shackleton Stakes on March 28 at Gulfstream with a 102 Beyer Speed Figure.

Vekoma returned to the work tab April 24 with an easy half-mile in 51.82 seconds over the Palm Beach Downs main track.
“We’re keeping him fit without really pushing on him,” Weaver said. “Once we have some kind of game plan race-wise, then we’ll start tightening the screws again, but the horse is doing fine.”
Meanwhile, Point of Honor is back at Palm Beach Downs following her third-place finish in the Grade 1 Apple Blossom at Oaklawn Park, where she rallied from another county to finish within 2 1/4 lengths of winner Ce Ce.
“She was 23 lengths out of it at the three-quarter pole and she ran great,” Weaver said. “She made a relatively wide move on the turn and was continuing to eat into the margin. We didn’t win the race, but if the performance was any indication of how she’s going to do this year I think it’s a great indication. I thought she ran huge.”
