Vasilika under consideration for Beverly D.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Through her remarkable campaign of 12 wins in 14 starts since being claimed for $40,000 in February 2018, Vasilika has raced exclusively at Del Mar and Santa Anita, winning seven graded stakes.
Vasilika, who won the Grade 1 Gamely Stakes at Santa Anita last Monday, may have her next start outside of California, in the Grade 1 Beverly D. Stakes for fillies and mares at 1 3/16 miles on turf at Arlington Park on Aug. 10.
“We might look at that,” trainer Jerry Hollendorfer said Friday.
The $600,000 Beverly D. is one of the nation’s leading races for fillies and mares on turf. In addition to its graded status and lucrative purse, the Beverly D. offers a fees-paid berth for the winner to the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf at Santa Anita on Nov. 2.
One drawback is the gap of more than two months between races, Hollendorfer said.
“That would be a long time to wait,” he said.
If Vasilika stays in California, there are two Grade 2 races worth $200,000 at the Del Mar summer meeting that will be considered – the Yellow Ribbon Handicap at 1 1-/6 miles on Aug. 3 and the John Mabee Stakes at 1 1/8 miles on Aug. 31.
Vasilika won her first graded stakes in the 2018 Mabee. This year, she is unbeaten in four starts for the partnership of Mark Schlaich, Gatto Racing, George Todaro, and Jerry Hollendorfer. Vasilika has won 17 of 32 starts and earned $1,358,595.
“She’s having a pretty good year,” Hollendorfer said.
