If Saturday’s $50,000 Luther Burbank at Golden Gate Fields looks like a rerun, it’s because it well could be. The 1 1/16-mile turf race for fillies and mares tops the first week of Wine Country Racing at Golden Gate Fields. The field includes the top three finishers from the June 7 Golden Poppy at the same distance. Sloane Garden rallied from last to win by 1 1/4 lengths that day, defeating favored Meal Ticket and Wicked Old Fashion. :: Start earning weekly cashback on your wagering today. Click to learn more. All three look tough again on Saturday, although the trainers of Meal Ticket and Wicked Old Fashion are hoping for a slightly different outcome. Sloane Garden and Meal Ticket rallied from last and next to last in the six-horse Golden Poppy. Sloane Garden has not run since the Golden Poppy, but Meal Ticket came back and ran fifth July 12 in the Osunitas at Del Mar. Trainer Matt Chew is hoping the 6-year-old Meal Ticket gets her first stakes win in the Luther Burbank. “She likes the course,” he said. “She’s run some winning races like she did in the Golden Poppy, but still is looking for a stakes win.” Meal Ticket is based at Del Mar, and Chew said he was “looking for a little class relief” by sending the filly north again. Wicked Old Fashion set the pace for a good part of the Golden Poppy, opened up in midstretch, but was caught by Sloane Garden and Meal Ticket and beaten 1 3/4 lengths. In her only race since, Wicked Old Fashion finished third of four in a 1 1/16-mile allowance race on the dirt at Pleasanton. Wicked Old Fashion has been first or second in 19 of her 30 starts, and she upset the Kathryn Crosby at 32-1 last November at Del Mar. :: To stay up to date, follow us on: Facebook | Instagram | Twitter Trainer Victor Trujillo is expecting Wicked Old Fashion to put in her usual good race in the Luther Burbank. “We’re not really doing anything different with her,” he said. “It’s the same routine. She always runs big races.” As for Sloane Garden, she has won two straight, having won a first-level allowance on the turf at Golden Gate two weeks before the Golden Poppy. Sloane Garden won both races with a strong stretch move. “When she explodes, she explodes,” said trainer Manny Badilla after the Golden Poppy. Badilla also saddles Ziarah, who refused to enter the gate in the Golden Poppy and was scratched. Three weeks later, Ziarah won an allowance on the dirt at Pleasanton – with Wicked Old Fashion among those behind her. She then finished seventh and last in the Osunitas.
