Van Lear Rose out for year

Van Lear Rose, Canada's champion 2-year-old filly last year, will not see action this season after suffering a suspensory injury.

The problem was discovered after Van Lear Rose breezed at Gulfstream last month.

"It's minor, but we want to make sure to give her the time she needs to heal," said Catherine Day Phillips, who trains the homebred Van Lear Rose for the Kingview Farm of her brother Richard Day.

Van Lear Rose put together back-to-back stakes wins at Woodbine last fall, capturing the restricted Muskoka at seven furlongs and the Grade 3 Mazarine at 1 1/16 miles.

In her most recent start, Van Lear Rose finished sixth of 13 in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Filles, beaten 5 3/4 lengths by the winner, Eclipse Award-recipient Stardom Bound. Through six starts, Van Lear Rose has earnings of $302,160.
