Seraphia’s appearance in the $300,000 Zia Park Oaks on Tuesday follows a deliberate pattern Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen has used with some of his runners for the annual Land of Enchantment card in New Mexico. “It’s always been nice timing, Oklahoma Derby Day to Zia Derby Day,” he said. “It’s always treated us well in the past, and I want that trend to continue.” Asmussen is heavily invested on Tuesday, with nine runners on the card that features seven stakes worth a cumulative $1.1 million. He’s represented in six of the stakes, with many of those runners having competed on the Oklahoma Derby Day card Sept. 28 at Remington Park. Asmussen has recorded stakes triples on Land of Enchantment Day in three separate years – 2021, 2023, and 2024. Seraphia is part of a field of seven in the 1 1/16-mile Zia Oaks. Her rivals include Kanojo, an Iowa-bred who is going for her sixth consecutive win; A Thousand Miles, who is moving back to dirt after finishing second in the Grade 3 Autumn Miss on turf at Santa Anita; and Rosato and Going Deep, a pair of recent turf winners who also are proven on dirt. Seraphia exits her stakes debut in the $200,000 Remington Park Oaks on the Oklahoma Derby undercard. The developing filly finished third in the 1 1/16-mile race. :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! Seraphia will break from post 2 under Asmussen’s son, Erik. “I like her draw for a two-turn race at Zia,” Steve Asmussen said. “Looking at the race, I thought she’d probably be third or fourth early, hopefully, and she stays on nicely.” Asmussen has saddled the winners of two past runnings of the Zia Oaks. Rosato enters off a third-place finish in a second-level allowance sprint at Churchill Downs. She will be making her first start for New Mexico-based trainer Joel Marr. “She’s been in Kentucky,” Marr said. “I had her at Sunland for a little while and Lone Star and shipped her to Kentucky. She won at Kentucky Downs on the grass. She’s a nice filly, but she’s never run the distance. She came in and looks good. We’ll see.” Rosato will break from the rail under Chris Landeros. “I think she’ll be forwardly placed, but not in front,” Marr said. “If she can just find a good spot off the lead and relax, that would be her best option.” Kanojo has won her last five starts by a combined margin of 30 lengths for trainer Kevin Eikleberry. Juvenile stakes Asmussen will send out probable favorite Fuel in the $100,000 Zia Park Juvenile. The horse was an impressive debut winner in August at Ellis Park. He finished third in his next start as the favorite in the $150,000 Clever Trevor on Oklahoma Derby Day at Remington. “I was disappointed in his last race and think he’s capable of better,” Asmussen said. “But you know, second time off of a big first time out, it’s not that surprising to regress just a bit. “Hopefully, he’ll get back to the ability he showed in his first race. I think it’s a good spot for him.” Erik Asmussen has the mount from post 2. The field of 10 for the six-furlong race includes The Hell We Did, a debut winner last out and a half-brother to $12 million earner Senor Buscador. Alfredo Juarez Jr. has the mount for trainer Todd Fincher. In the $100,000 Zia Princess, Asmussen will send out Wakuda. She rallied from fourth to get up for a neck win in a maiden special weight on the Oklahoma Derby undercard Sept. 28. “It was a little bit of a new dimension for her,” Asmussen said. Ryvit in Sprint Ryvit enters the $100,000 Zia Sprint off a notable allowance win Oct. 25 at Remington. He covered 5 1/2 furlongs in the mud in a quick 1:02.60. For his effort, the millionaire earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 94, which is the best last-race number in the Zia Sprint. :: Subscribe to the DRF Post Time Email Newsletter: Get the news you need to play today's races!  “Well, if it rains, we’ll love him,” quipped Asmussen. ◗ In the $100,000 Zia Distaff at the same six-furlong distance as the Sprint, Asmussen will saddle Remington allowance winner Banterra. ◗ In the $100,000 Championship, for 3-year-olds and up over 1 1/8 miles, the barn is represented by Track Phantom. He, too, is coming off an allowance win at Remington. The deep race also drew Grade 3 Cornhusker winner Cornishman, plus Bearings and Heroic Move, who finished a respective one-two last out in the Downs at Albuquerque Handicap. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
