U.S. Cavalry strong at the finish

Joe DeVivo|Jan 05, 2008

U.S. Cavalry ($4.80) overtook pacesetter Mr. Harry in deep stretch and pulled clear to a 1 1/4-length victory in the $50,000 Turfway Prevue for 3-year-olds at Turfway Park.

Ridden by Brian Hernandez Jr. for trainer Michael Maker, U.S. Cavalry won for the fourth time in his last five starts. He is 3 for 4 since Maker claimed him for $50,000 on behalf of Ken and Sarah Ramsay out of a maiden race in late September. In winning his stakes debut, he covered 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:16.94.

Mr. Harry, the 5-2 second choice in a field of 10, opened up a three-length lead turning for home, but grew weary in the stretch, allowing U.S. Cavalry to make up considerable ground as he rallied down the center of the track.
