Untapable confirmed for Apple Blossom Handicap

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – Last year’s 3-year-old filly champion, Untapable, is confirmed for a start in the Grade 1, $600,000 Apple Blossom Handicap, trainer Steve Asmussen said Monday. She breezed a half-mile earlier in the day in her final prep for the 1 1/16-mile race, which will be run Friday at Oaklawn Park.
“We’re a go,” Asmussen said Monday afternoon after firming up plans with owners Winchell Thoroughbreds.
Asmussen said John Velazquez has the mount on Untapable.
Untapable breezed by herself Monday, going in 48 seconds. Clockers had her final quarter in 23 seconds and galloping out five furlongs in 1:01.40. The move was the fastest of 17 drills at the distance at Oaklawn.
Untapable is the 121-pound highweight for the Apple Blossom. She is expected to be part of a field of perhaps five fillies and mares. Gold Medal Dancer remains a candidate for the race, according to her trainer, Donnie Von Hemel, while Sugar Shock will likely run, said trainer Doug Anderson.
Oaklawn racing officials are also expecting Pearl Turn.
Entries for the race were to be taken Tuesday.
