Unrivaled Time, winner of the Grade 3 Cecil B. DeMille Stakes on turf at Del Mar on Sunday, is likely to have a brief rest this winter in advance of a 2026 season geared toward the leading races for 3-year-olds on turf. Trainer Leonard Powell said on Wednesday that Unrivaled Time is unlikely to start in the next stakes for 2-year-olds on turf in California, the $100,000 Eddie Logan Stakes at a mile at Santa Anita on Dec. 28. “We might give him a freshening, looking for a big year next year,” Powell said. “If he’s as good as we hope he is, we’ll have to travel east and he’ll need a little bit of a break. All the big money is east.” In the $101,000 DeMille Stakes, Unrivaled Time closed from third with a rally between runners to win by three-quarters of a length. Unrivaled Time has won 2 of 3 starts, including a maiden race for California-breds at a mile on turf at Santa Anita on Oct. 19. Powell describes Unrivaled Time as “still a work in progress.” :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! DRF Past Performances and Picks are available now. At Santa Anita through mid-June, there are four stakes on turf for 2-year-old this year and 3-year-olds of 2026, all worth $100,000. Tracks such as Churchill Downs and Keeneland offer more lucrative turf stakes for 3-year-olds in the spring. Powell will have stakes runners at Santa Anita on Dec. 26, opening day of the track’s winter-spring meeting. He plans to start Tempus Volat in the Grade 2 Mathis Mile, a $200,000 turf race for 3-year-olds, and the duo of Resolve and Ribbons in the Grade 1 American Oaks, a $300,000 race for 3-year-old fillies at 1 1/4 miles on turf. Ribbons won an allowance race at a mile on turf at Santa Anita on Oct. 30. Resolve was second in an allowance race at 1 3/8 miles on turf at Del Mar on Nov. 24. Tempus Volat won the restricted Let It Ride Stakes at a mile for 3-year-olds on turf at Del Mar on Oct. 30, and was fourth by 1 3/4 lengths in the Grade 1 Hollywood Derby at 1 1/8 miles on turf last Saturday. Tempus Volat, who was ridden by Mirco Demuro, was second for most of the race and was within a head of the lead in the stretch. “He ran his race,” Powell said. “I wished we had moved a bit sooner. That was a slow pace. My jockey waited for the closers to come after him. I don’t know if we would have won, but I think we would have hit the board if he had moved sooner.” After Christmas, Nitti, winner of the Grade 3 San Juan Capistrano Stakes at about 1 3/4 miles on turf at Santa Anita in June, is scheduled to rejoin Powell’s stable for a 2026 campaign. Nitti has not raced since the San Juan Capistrano and was turned out in late summer. “We had to give him some time off,” Powell said. “He’ll be back in the spring.” :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
