Uni slow early, fast late in work for Lake Placid Stakes
RACE REPLAY IS NOT AVAILABLE
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Uni, third in the Grade 1 Belmont Oaks behind stablemates New Money Honey and Sistercharlie, worked five furlongs in 1:03.15 Monday morning in preparation for a start in Saturday’s Grade 2, $300,000 Lake Placid Stakes at Saratoga.
Uni worked in company with Roca Rojo, and the two broke off slowly, going an opening quarter in 27.02 seconds. They finished in 36.13 and galloped out six furlongs in 1:16.30.
“They broke off a little too slow, but they finished good,” trainer Chad Brown said.
Uni broke slowly in the Belmont Oaks, but rallied from next to last to finish just two lengths behind New Money Honey.
“She seems like she’s moved forward from the race,” Brown said.
A field of five was expected to be entered Wednesday for the Lake Placid, a 1 1/8-mile turf race. The others are Coasted, La Coronel, Party Boat, and Proctor’s Ledge.
Coasted, seventh in the Belmont Oaks, worked a half-mile Monday in 50.44 seconds over the Oklahoma turf course.
Brown also on Monday worked his Grade 1-winning pair of older females Lady Eli and Antonoe a half-mile in 49.06 seconds, with a final quarter of 23.50 seconds.
Lady Eli, the Diana winner, is awaiting the Grade 1 Flower Bowl at Belmont on Oct. 8. Antonoe, the Just a Game winner and third in the Diana, is a candidate for the Grade 2, $400,000 Ballston Spa on Aug. 26, a race that Roca Rojo is also targeting.
